Welcome to Writing That Gets Noticed
Estelle Erasmus/Writing That Gets Noticed
Welcome,
I have been the editor-in-chief of five national consumer publications (also, what used to be called Women’s Magazines). Getting married and dealing with infertility in midlife was challenging, and I pivoted into medical education for seven years. By the time my daughter was born in 2009, I faced a changing publishing landscape that had forgotten me. Though I initially felt left behind, I vowed, as I had when becoming a mother in my forties, that I would find a way to get back into the spotlight, and get my writing noticed.
It took some time. First, I became an accidental advocate of mothers’ rights when I joined the board of the former national group Mothers & More. Then, in the early days of motherhood, I lost my creative spark and had no idea how to get it back. But, I did. I ended up learning about a spoken word performance called Listen to Your Mother. I had written an essay about my daughter, and read it at the audition. I got into the show — the inaugural New York City show — and it changed my life.
I learned about blogging, and became an accidental influencer when I started my former blog Musings on Motherhood: A Journalist’s Transformative Journey. I remember working on developing my website and setting it up until three in the morning, determined to finish it. I pivoted back into writing — for The New York Times, The Washington Post, The Independent, GH, The Week — and more — and teaching my students at NYU and Writer’s Digest the secrets of publishing fast and furiously. My book, called WRITING THAT GETS NOTICED: Find Your Voice, Become a Better Storyteller, Get Published will be published this year by New World Library, and I’m so excited to share more of my publishing wisdom through the book — and this newsletter.
There is a lot more to my story, and if you subscribe to this newsletter, you will learn about it. The first “real” issue will drop in a couple of days. Stay tuned and meanwhile forward this to your friends so they can sign up! Also, I plan to start Friday office hours for paying subscribers, where you will get my 25+ years of experience in publishing, so why not jump on it now.
Thank you!
